Recently we posted all about Prepping for College Interviews. Since college interviews are rapidly approaching and acceptance letters are looming on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to start prepping for your impending college interview. There are a handful of common mistakes that happen over and over again. Some might seem like common sense and some are, however it is good to remind yourself so you can ace your interview. Here are some common college interview mistakes and what you shouldn’t do.
Be late. You wouldn’t be late for work, school, or football practice. Why would you be late for your college interview? Your interviewers are busy people, especially if they are alumni. Be courteous and do not be late.
Dress appropriate. Like any other interview you want to dress the image you want to project. Business casual is probably your safest bet, but the main thing is to look neat and put-together. Don’t wear your old Halloween costume or your prom dress.
Don’t be afraid to talk. Your interviewer is there to get to know you. Don’t be afraid to tell him/her your honest opinion and tell them how you really feel. You do not want to be wasting your time or theirs if you do not want to attend their university. While you shouldn’t prepare a speech, you should prep for potential questions.
Be prepared. Don’t show up to your interview and assume you would just be able to wing it. Treat this like any other interview and prepare for your interview. Research the college and come up with two or three questions you can ask your interviewer.
Don’t lie. While it might seem easy to tell a little white lie in your interview, chances are your white lie is going to come back to bite you in the butt later on.
Some other things to keep in mind:
- Be polite and don’t forget your manners.
- Make sure to send your interviewer a thank you note (whether it be via email or snail mail).
Hopefully these tips help you prepare for you college interview.
